Hi All,

We are trying to work in improving the overall functioality of our websites. If you encounter any problem in using the websites like form not working, getting some error, abnormal closure of pages, any invalid data please enter a detailed description of your problem in the attached excel sheet.

This would help the developers involved in the web site maintenance to be able to look into the code easily, correct the forms/database which could have resulted in the problem.

Also, any inputs and suggestions would be highly appreciated.

"Who Am I..."

During the last Wednesday and Thursday sessions of this month, we will be taking part in the Who Am I trivia game in which the group will have an opportunity to win prizes by stating the correct name of the person who is being showcased by the presenter who will be providing a series of clues.

(ex. “I was born in Brooklyn New York...who am I? I played basketball for the North Carolina Tar Heels...who am I? I am considered to be one of the best basketball players of all time...who am I? If you said Michael Jordan...THEN YOU ARE THE WINNER!!!

This is how the Who Am I trivia game will work...and the person who gets the person right will win a prize and have the opportunity to present the next Black History Icon.

Smitty real name Michael’s known to his schoolmates as "The Alien" because of his affectless appearance and complete silence. Soon, Ginny and Smitty's longtime protector, Caulder, team up to try and crack his shell. They get much more than they bargain for when they drag him along on old-movie outings; as a none-too-subtle plot device, the first turns out to be The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, the second, East of Eden. Smitty walks out of both, for it turns out that he was almost fatally abused by his older brother, who also convinced him that he would die if he spoke to anyone. With the help of Ginny, Caulder and a wise and sympathetic therapist, Smitty emerges from this psychological curse, and he and Ginny even begin a tentative romantic relationship. Randle (Why Did Grandma Have to Die?) unfortunately builds her otherwise well-crafted novel around an uncharacteristic response to abuse. Under his pain, Smitty is totally honest and caring a very romantic figure, but not one likely to be found in the real world.

Summary - Samir, a Palestinian boy, is sent for surgery to an Israeli hospital where he has two otherworldly experiences, making friends with an Israeli boy, Yonatan, and traveling with him to Mars where Samir finds peace over his younger brother's death in the war.

Teen pregnancy prevention

I've started a brainstorming section on the Cabrini Wiki related to teen pregnancy prevention. Each year it seems that at least one of our young women becomes pregnant. Is there something we might be doing to prevent this? Are there two or three volunteers that would like to take the lead in this area, similar to the way volunteers are leading the College Zone.

We have two Bullpen Box seat tickets, valued at $250 each, for the make up game between the Cubs and the White Sox, which will be this Thursday at 1:20 pm.

We'd like to sell these, if we can, so I'll accept bids starting a $100 for both tickets, up until Tuesday at 6pm. You'll need to pick up the tickets and pay on Wednesday.

Jimmy Biggs Memorial Cabrini Connections Golf Benefit, July 16, 2009

The annual Cabrini Connections Golf Benefit is named in memory of Jimmy Biggs, a young man who grew up in Cabrini Green with the help of the volunteer tutors/mentors of Cabrini Connections. Jimmy became part of the tutor/mentor program when he was in 2nd grade. He graduated from high school in 1995 and became part of the Cabrini Connections staff.

Jimmy championed the goals of Cabrini Connections and the Tutor/Mentor Connection. Jimmy had a personal goal of recruiting 100 CEOs and "people of influence" to be his personal mentors and his partner in bringing resources to Cabrini Connections and similar mentoring-to-career programs throughout Chicago. Jimmy was working toward this vision when he died suddenly in August 2000. Because of the friends and "people of influence" Jimmy met at the annual golf benefit, the event is named in his honor.

The 2009 Golf Benefit will be held at the Highland Park Country Club on July 16. There will be a shotgun start at 1pm and a dinner and silent auction, starting at 6pm (or as golfers come off the course).

The annual year end dinner celebrates the work of one year, and begins the work of the coming year!

Cool Links & Cool Cash And Black History Month Activity...

Starting next week we will be heading into our third week of the Cool Links & Cool Cash eLearning activity, we decided to use this activity as a way of celebrating and honoring the influential people who make Black History Month historic!

For the entire month of February we be featuring and focusing on links of various famous and historic African Americans of the past and present.

The Cabrini Connections’ staff will Kick-Off the activity by posting 10 links for all mentors and mentees to browse. After browsing through the initial 10 links we are encouraging you all to share your thoughts on the links you viewed AND begin a discussion about what you learned from the information.

*This is how you earn you Cool Cash for the week ($2 or $4)*

Each week for the remainder of the month we are encouraging all mentors and mentees to begin posting other links of influential African Americans for all to view AND continue to share thoughts on links that you find interesting!!!

At the end of the month we will turn all of you efforts into a fun-fill activity where people can earn even more prizes!!!

Cool Cash eLearning Program for Students and Volunteers

eLearning Activity

Intro/Description:

Cabrini Connections is launching a new and exciting eLearning activity that will not only provide students and volunteers with an abundant amount of resources that can be used inside and outside of the program, but this activity comes with some added rewards $$$!

The Cool Links & Cool Cash activity encourages students and volunteers to use the online resources that Cabrini Connections and the Tutor/Mentor Connection provide to support students and volunteers with reaching the student’s academic and career goals.

So how does this activity work!?!?!

Step 1:

On a weekly basis e-Learning and Technology Coordinator (Vjeko Hlede) will be selecting a category in the T/MC links library and analyzing a variety of links and websites in the selected category. He will describe the range of links in that category and highlight one or two he feels volunteers and students might want to use in an article that will be posted on his blog by Monday morning of each week.

Step 2:

Both students and mentors will visit Vjeko’s blog between Monday and Sunday of that week to read the article Vjeko wrote for that week. After taking the time to read Vjeko’s feedback, both students and mentors will visit the same section and review the links themselves. Note: while this can be done during a tutoring session, the goal is to coach teens and volunteers to visit these sites whenever they have access to a computer, not just during weekly tutoring.

Step 3:

Pick one or two links from the selection highlighted for that week, that you find interesting or useful for home work help, career planning, or student leadership and then place your comments/feedback about that link(s) in the specific forum located inside of the SVHATS system that has been created for that week’s review. (Students can write about the same link or set of links that Vjeko covered in his blog OR links that were of more interest to students and volunteers. You must write about links featured from that week.)

*Your audience is other tutors and other volunteers. Your purpose is to help them learn what links to visit based upon your review. Be sure to provide complete sentences (one word responses will not be accepted) Take some time and provide your thoughts about what you viewed. This is a writing activity, as well as an eLearning activity.

*Let us know if any of the links are not working probably as well (and we will remove them)

Step 4:

Repeat Steps 1-3 the following week!!!

-Students must submit at least 1 accepted post each week to earn cash or points. (Students are encouraged to post more than 1, but will only receive payment for the 1 post

- A ledger will be kept by Vjeko, showing what students and volunteers have posted comments each week.

-Students will receive $2 cash per week (if an acceptable review is posted) for that post on a bi-weekly basis

-Vjeko will distribute the payment every other Wednesday and Thursday before and during the tutoring session

*Special note* Cash will cover the first 150 student postings in the quarter (could increase in the future)

-only student’s entries count towards receiving the cash!

2: Bonus Points towards scholarship money

-when both students AND their mentors the student have the opportunity to earn a 100 added bonus points a quarter to their scholarship point totals

-Vjeko will tally up all of the student and mentor weekly postings for the quarter (valued at 1 pt per post) and the TOP 20 students who had the most points in the quarter will have 100 bonus pts to their scholarship point total.

Closing:

The Cool Cash & Cool Links activity should be thought of not only as a fun way to take advantage of some of the resources that Cabrini Connections provides and a way to build writing and communications skills, AND earn some ‘cool cash,’ but this activity should also be thought of as one of the many tools that can and will assist the Cabrini Connections’ students with reaching their academic and career goals for the near and distant future!

Hello All!

Just wanted to encourage all volunteers to take a look at the post in the Volunteer Cafe' section of SVHATS. The note that was placed in that section is an attempt for the volunteers and staff who attended the Tutor Training Conference on September 27, 2008 to share what they learned at the event with others.

This is one of the many ways in which the SVHATS system can and will be used to assist each other with providing the best possible services to the youth in which we serve.
